Event:
2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Virginia is a student at Dr. John Gillis Regional High School and her project is called 'All Packed Up'. At her Regional Science Fair, Virginia won 4th place overall, a Science Process Award for an Intermediate Experiment from NSERC, a St. Francis Xavier Physics Department prize, and a Gold Medal in Intermediate Physical & Mathematical Science.

This project is a series of experiments to model the random close-packing (RCP) of atoms in solids in both two and three dimensions. These experiments were designed to measure two specific properties of randomly close-packed structures: the packing efficiency, defined as the amount of space actually filled by the atoms, and the average coordination number.

At the Canada-Wide Science Fair, Virginia won a Bronze Medal in Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and was awarded a $1000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario.

Congratulations, Virginia!
