How has English Vocabulary Changed over Time?
|
|

Student: James Harris

District/Region:
Chignecto Central Region

Event:
2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

James is a student at West Pictou Consolidated School and his project investigated How has English Vocabulary Changed over Time? At his Regional Science Fair, James won the Award for the Most Original Grade 8 Project as well as 3rd place overall. GOLD MEDAL WINNER!!

This project analyzed how the size of English vocabulary has changed over time by analyzing a random sample of electronic books from Project Gutenberg using a home-made Python script. The unique and common word counts over time were then graphed by decade. Both the unique and common word counts show an increase over the time period studied.

James was one of two Nova Scotia gold medal winners at the Canada-Wide Science Fair: he brought home a Gold Medal in the Computing and Information Technology category and a scholarship to the University of Western Ontario ($2000).

Congratulations, James!
