Ocular Trauma

Student: Adam Mertens

District/Region: South Shore District

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Adam is a student at New Germany Rural High School and his project investigated 'Ocular trauma'. At his Regional Science Fair, Adam won a SSRSF Merit Award.

Paintball and air soft guns are popular among teenagers, but adequate eye protection is not always worn. Using ballistics gelatin, Adam tested guns of different velocities to find out what damage could be caused to the eye. His testing showed that eye protection is vital to prevent serious and/or permanent ocular injuries and education is needed to change people's habits.

At the Nationals, Adam won a Silver Medal in Health Sciences and a University of Western Ontario Scholarship. Congratulations, Adam!
