Event:
2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Amie and Emma are both grade 10 students at Dartmouth High School. Their project, 'Biomining', was an investigation into the antimicrobial properties of fungi, lichens and common seasonings.

The fungus Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, the lichens Cladonia rangiferina and Usnea fillipendula, and the seasonings garlic, turmeric and jalapeņo pepper were tested for antimicrobial properties against E-Coli (Escherichia coli DH5α), a Level 1 human pathogen. Antibiotics streptomycin and ampicillin were used as positive controls. Negative controls were also run.

Of the test species, Amie and Emma determined that only garlic was found to demonstrate antimicrobial properties. Congratulations, Amie and Emma!
