Life or Death! Will the Snowmobile Float?

Student: Leah Smith & Chantal Sheaves

District/Region: Halifax Region

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Chantal and Leah are both grade 9 students at Sackville Heights Junior High School. Their project is called 'La Vie ou la Mort! Est-ce que la Motoneige va Flotter?' – 'Life or Death! Will the Snowmobile Float?'

Their project is a safety device for Snowmobiles which they designed, constructed, and tested. With many snowmobile-related deaths occurring every year, the girls identified an opportunity and developed an inflating device that will cause a snowmobile to float if it breaks through the ice on a lake or other body of water. This novel invention could potentially save many lives.

At their Regional Science Fair, Leah and Chantal won Best Intermediate display, an Engineering Award, and an Award for Excellence. Congratulations, Chantal and Leah!
