A Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can participate in a conversation about current science and technology over a cup of coffee. Cafes are facilitated by subject matter experts who help to engage participants in the conversation about the selected topic.

“Water for Life” will focus on conversations about something essential to life – WATER! Water is a basic requirement for all life, yet water resources are facing increasing demands from, and competition among, users.

Canada Water Week is a week-long celebration of water from coast-to-coast-to-coast, starting March 14 and culminating with World Water Day on March 22, 2011. Individuals, organizations and governments across the country are encouraged to get involved by organizing or participating in fun and educational events. Find out more: canadawaterweek.com.

In 1992, the UN General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water. World Water Day 2005 marked the start of a new UN International Decade for Action on water aimed towards achieving international water-related goals and the United Nations Millennium Declaration. The “Water for Life” International Decade for Action provides an excellent opportunity for the international community to advance towards a truly integrated approach to the management of the world’s water that ensures its sustainable use for generations to come.
“Celebrating water for life” is a publication of the United Nations that introduces key issues relevant to water. Find out more [PDF].

Finding the Science in Everyday Life

Doing a science fair project does not have to be a drag. Instead of searching the internet for someone else’s idea, try finding the science in something you are interested in.

Are you a skateboarder? There is plenty of physics involved in the friction on the board surface and design of shoe soles, the spring in the board, the rotation of the wheels, the features of specific tricks like time in air, height of ramp and so on.

Are you an athlete? You have a sport and a body to analyze. Heart rate, aerobic capacity, specific training goals, equipment design and function are all possibilities.

Do you like farming or gardening? From soil conditions and analysis to plant growth and pests, plant genetics to crop optimization, there are lots of possibilities in our province. Nova Scotia Agricultural College does active research and has an experimental farm.

You may be suprised to learn that NSCC has green technology specialists at many campuses. Musicians have an inside tract on intrument construction, sound quality, and recording technology to name a few.

Are you a postage stamp collector? Paper, inks, tagging dyes, printing techniques and more topics are all possible. An equestrian? You have great prospects for photo analysis. There is science in almost everything you might be interested in.

And by the way, a good project does NOT have a tidy ending. Most real experiments lead to more questions that need to be investigated.

Your project should be judged based on the quantity and quality of your work and the strength of your analysis and interpretation. Knowing where your work leads in other experiments is an important result.

Try to come up with a “personal” project, and do not be discouraged by the time it takes to decide. The “pros” say picking the project is the hardest part. If you need a hint, the internet is crowded with science fair material. A lot of it is old and not very good. If you need a tip, start with the following links.

http://ysf.ca/Members/pdirectory4.aspx

It includes rules and necessary forms for experiments with humans, other animals, explosives and firearms, and recombinant DNA.

Experiments with living things or dangerous equipment and materials are closely monitored. Ethics and safety are major concerns with all experimentation. Feeding caffeine to small vertebrates would be considered an unusual stress on the animal, and would not be approved.

Homemade explosive devices would be questioned. Some projects can proceed under supervision if pre-approved. Every Year there are project that arrive at the Canada-Wide Science Fair that have not met the conditions outlined in the rules. They are disqualified and the students are sent home.

If there is any doubt that the project you are considering might be rejected, protect yourself by checking the rules at the link above and complete any necessary forms before you have done a lot of work.

Nova Scotia’s up-and-coming scientists came away with three gold, eight silver, eight bronze medals and six honourable mentions from the National Science Fair in Peterborough this May. Nova Scotia students joined 450 of their peers from across the county for the nine-day competition.

“The skills students learn when going through the process of developing an idea and seeing it through to the end are applied in many other areas of life,” said Cliff Coveyduc, program director of NS YES, Nova Scotia’s provincial organization for science fairs. “We are delighted to have sent the largest-ever delegation of students to the Science Fair this year; the future of Nova Scotia is in great hands.”

Elise Tessier, a Grade 12 student at West Kings District High School, won a gold medal in Life Sciences for her analysis of spinach grown under different light intensities and durations to determine if bioactive compounds can be enhanced without compromising crop yield. Her findings could potentially lead to tailoring plants to combat many diseases, including some cancers. Elise also received the Actuarial Foundation of Canada Award and the Manning Innovation Achievement Award for her project Can Stress Bring Out the Best?

Arash Marzi, a Grade 11 student at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional School, won a gold medal in Computing and Information Technology for his study on the application of the bees algorithm, embedded with an artificial neural network to determine practical yearly reductions for minimizing oil, natural gas, and coal emissions in Canada’s manufacturing sector based on the Copenhagen Targets for Canada for 2020.

The other winners include:
