National science fair to promote green projects

TRURO — Canada’s budding scientists meeting in Truro this month for the National Science Fair will witness the launch of a year-long challenge encouraging young people to find solutions to environmental problems.

Via Rail’s new EnviroExpo provides $30,000 worth of scholarships to winners in the environmental innovation division. The scholarships will be awarded in 2008.

Science fair participants clean up

Nova Scotia’s budding young scientists earned 11 medals from the recent Canada-Wide Science Fair. Thirty-six Nova Scotia students joined about 450 peers from across the county for the nine-day competition in Truro, Colchester Co.

Live Robot Wars on DiscoveryChannel.ca

DiscoveryChannel.ca has launched full-scale coverage of a weekend event that one producer described as the rock concert of high school science competitions. The FIRST Toronto Regional Robotics Competition brings together some of the brainiest Canadian and American high school students to compete in a range of robotics-based events at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

BIBLE HILL – Cody Chambers would like to see a better bracelet to alert people who go into anaphylactic shock. It was what the North River Elementary School student did his science fair project on.  He knows time is of the essence when someone succumbs to a peanut allergy. That is why the North River youngster looked into ways people with anaphylaxis could alert others for assistance.

SMBA student qualifies for national science fair

Julia Martin, a student at the Weymouth-area high school, last week won the grades 9 and 10 division at the 2007 regional science fair held at the NSCC Burridge Campus in Yarmouth. Martin also finished third overall and is now eligible to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair this May in Truro.

N.Z. students a model for consumer action

A science project launched by two teenage students in New Zealand has cost a huge multinational more than $180,000 and forced it to launch a nationwide ad campaign to correct claims about vitamin C in the popular Ribena blackcurrant drink.
