Up in the Air - VOC Production by Phytoplankton

Grade 8 - Centre Consolidated School

Very little is understood about the relationship between phytoplankton and the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) they produce. It has been reported that the quantity and type of VOCs varies from species to species, although other variables likely play a role. This relationship was studied in the laboratory as well as through analyzed field samples.

Mon projet examiné comment les couleurs et la superficie ont effectué la génération de la chaleur par la lumière. Des couleurs était comparées et les canettes ont donné la superficie supplémentaire nécessaire pour l'expérience. Un laboratoire a été construit pour complété les teste. Les résultats ont le potentiel d'aider les personne à chauffer leur maisons.

Max VO2 vs. Resting Heart Rates

This project performs a study to see if there is a direct relationship between a person's max VO2 (the maximum volume of oxygen that can be consumed when exercising at a maximum capacity) and his/her resting heart rate.

Planaria Regeneration and Memory

We took planaria worms and taught them to live in the sunlight instead of the shade. After we taught them we cut them in half and let them regenerate back to 2 separate full worms, we then saw if the 2 worms remembered what we had taught the original worm.

For our project, Trash Talk, we conducted a study on the disposal methods at Ellenvale Junior High school's lunch program. Our hypothesis was 20-40% of the garbage the students were throwing away was compostable/recyclable.

A Radical Theory: Why Antioxidants May Not Always Be Good

Antioxidants are generally considered to be beneficial to cells because of their ability to impede the damaging effects of free radicals. However, recent studies have shown that free radicals, specifically reactive oxygen species (ROS), promote the differentiation of stem cells into somatic cells.

Let The 'D' Shine In

Grade 8 - West Pictou Consolidated School

This study investigates if Pictou County residents get enough vitamin D. Data compiled from anonymous surveys from two school and blood tests concluded that people are vitamin D deficient and many were unaware of the benefits of this vitamin. This result mirrored a recent study done on vitamin D deficiencies in the Canadian population.

C'est Courber: Mesurer l'indice de réfraction des solutions sucrées

Grade 9 - École NDA

L'objectif de cette expérience était de mesurer l'indice de réfraction des solutions sucrées et par conséquent prouver la loi de Snell. J'ai utilisé un laser et un prisme triangulaire faite en verre pour trouver l'indice de réfraction de quatre solutions avec des différentes concentrations de sucres. J'ai trouvé que le plus de sucre dans une solution, le plus grand l'indice de réfraction.

Is Its Bark Worse Than Its Bite?

Grade 11 - South Colchester Academy

The essential oils of needles from evergreen trees native to Nova Scotia, were extracted and then tested against a gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Results were for the gram-negative bacteria (e-coli) the white pine worked to inhibit the bacteria. For the gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus) white pine, red spruce, white spruce, and Balsam fir work to inhibit the bacteria.

L'Énergie du Vent

Mon projet 'L'énergie du vent' démontre qu'un moulin à vent qui tourne verticalement peut être une alternative au commun horizontal moulin à vent et que c'est possible de produire de l'énergie en utilisant une ressource naturelle comme le vent qui protège l'environnement. Le moulin à vent a été essayé avec cinq différentes formes de lames pour déterminer qu'elle lame produit le plus d'électricité.

Blanding's: A Species at Risk

Emydoidea blandingii is a nationally endangered species at risk. This study examined four data sets related to efforts to find the Blanding's turtle in the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve, including my trapping session at Flanders Meadow. There were no Blanding's caught. This is important because we have limited knowledge of the distribution of Blanding's in remote areas.

Moi je fais mon Projet sur les trains Maglev et comment ils travaillent. J'ai fait de la recherche sur comment ils suspendent en l'air, sa suspende utilisons les aimants. Le train ne touche pas la terre, alors il y a moins de résistance et le train peut aller aux vitesses vraiment rapide ça moyenne 300km a 500km par heure. J'ai aussi fait des expériences avec les aimants et les électro-aimants. Qui démontre comment construire un aimant et un électro-aimant, changer les pôle d'un électro-aimant, suspende un train Maglev et bouger un train Maglev.

Due to sporadic climate change and global warming, there is an urgent need to reduce CO2 emission and nation's leaders' have signed international protocols with the intent to reduce their nation's carbon footprint. This study focuses on the application of the bees algorithm, embedded with an artificial neural network, to determine practical yearly reductions for minimizing oil, natural gas, and coal emissions in Canada's manufacturing sector based on the Copenhagen Targets for Canada for 2020.

I investigated: i) the effect of air column length in two different tubes each closed at one end with different liquids (water and canola oil) and two different solids (wood and paper), on resonant frequencies generated; and ii) used the data to calculate the speed of sound in the air columns of the tubes used, under home-designed experiments. Less dense solids generated lower frequencies.

Pour voir l'effet des différents types de 'bruits colorés', j'ai examiné quatre types de plantes (les pois, les haricots, les radis et les trèfles) exposés à trois différents bruits colorés (le Bruit Blanc, Violet et Brownien). J'ai découvert que la plupart de plantes poussent mieux sous l'influence du Bruit Blanc, mais que le Bruit Violet était plus efficace pour faire pousser les radis.

During the reconstruction of North Queens School, there was an oil spill, which caused many problems. This was due the soil under the spill letting so much oil pass through and absorbing little. This gave me my topic. What soil absorbs oil the best? This was the question investigated by this project. It tests how 4 different oils are absorbed by 5 different oils.
