HALIFAX - February 15, 2006 - Students across the province have a new resource to help them get involved in science fairs. The 'Science is Everywhere' DVD features Nova Scotia students who participated in the 2005 Canada-Wide Science Fair describing their projects, where their ideas came from, and their feelings towards entering the fair.

Nova Scotia Youth Experiences in Science (NSYES) mailed over 200 copies of the DVD to school boards and junior and senior high schools on Feb. 8. The video is a joint project between NSYES and the Halifax Sci-Tech Expo.

'Their peers are the best ambassadors for showing our students that science fair participation is within anyone's reach,' said Cliff Coveyduc, program director of NSYES, the province's umbrella science fair organization. 'This is the time of year when many teachers and students begin thinking about science fair projects. We hope that students will feel motivated to get involved after seeing the DVD in their science classes.'

The 'Science is Everywhere' DVD was sponsored by EnCana Corporation and produced by Prisma Productions in Halifax.

The promotional video is one of a series of tools NSYES and partners will launch this year. In 2006, NSYES will introduce a resource for teachers and community volunteers to help plan a science fair, and other materials to support young scientists.

Each year, more than 10,000 secondary students in Nova Scotia participate in school-based science fairs, with more than 1,000 students moving on to participate in a regional science fair. About 40 students then go on to represent Nova Scotia at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, a prestigious national event that attracts hundreds of young scientists and volunteers from across Canada every year.

The 2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair takes place May 13 to 21 at Universite du Quebec a Chicoutimi in Saguenay, Quebec.

About Halifax Sci-Tech Expo

The Halifax Sci-Tech Expo is an exciting showcase of Halifax Regional School Board student talent in various fields of science and technology. Students who have been selected by their schools to participate in the Regional Sci-Tech Expo have an opportunity to present their projects to a panel of judges, to their peers from across the Halifax area, as well as to the general public. Halifax Sci-Tech Expo is a partnership between NSYES, Discovery Centre, Nova Scotia Department of Education, EnCana Corporation, and Genome Atlantic. The next expo will be held at the Akerley Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College on April 6 & 7, 2006.
