HALIFAX - March 2, 2006 - In celebration of Nova Scotia's 10,000 students participating in science
and technology fairs this month, March has been proclaimed Youth Science Month.

Schools and community centres across the province will host 10 regional science fairs where junior and
senior high school students will show off their innovations, studies and experiments.

'With our future economy and quality of life depending on the achievements of the next generation of innovators, everyone benefits by supporting the young scientists in our families, schools and communities,' said Cliff Coveyduc, program director of Nova Scotia Youth Experiences in Science, the provincial umbrella organization for science fairs.

'By supporting young innovators and future entrepreneurs today, we can all help support the discoveries, jobs and inventions they will create tomorrow.'

Science fairs help develop many facets of a student's abilities, from practicing fundamental math and literacy to sharpening research and presentation skills.

Nova Scotia is sending 40 participants, it's largest ever delegation, to the Canada-Wide Science Fair this year. This is the first time that students from Conseil scoliare acadien p rovincial and t he M i'kmaq First Nations schools will compete at the national fair.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair is the largest extra-curricular youth activity of its kind related to science and technology in Canada. Each year, 450 of the country's top young scientists are chosen to compete from over 25,000 national competitors at nearly 100 regional fairs staged across the country. The national fair will be held in Saguenay, Quebec, from May 13 to 21.

Youth Science Month is part of a national awareness program led by Youth Science Foundation Canada, a national organization for youth science awareness. The purpose is to raise awareness and support for Canadian science fairs and our nation's young scientists.
