The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is almost here! Come celebrate!

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, stimulating worldwide interest not only in astronomy, but in science in general, with a particular slant towards young people.

The Opening Celebration is January 7-13 in Nova Scotia. Visit www.astronomynovascotia.ca for a list of upcoming local events, including:

- public lectures by leading astronomers from near and far
- public 'sidewalk' observing sessions with telescopes
- beginner talks at Halifax Public Library branches
- mall displays of telescopes and astronomical information
- astronomers in school classrooms
- stepped up tours of the Burke-Gaffney Observatory
- astronomy days at the Discovery Centre
- public Halifax Planetarium shows
