This first annual BioBlitz of Nova Scotia will be an opportunity to watch taxonomists - scientists who identify and often name plants, animals and fungi - at work. A BioBlitz is a taxonomic survey to identify as many different groups of organisms as possible in a 24-hour period. This BioBlitz will be held at Exhibition Park and will be led by Saint Mary's University in partnership with the Ecology Action Centre, the Discovery Centre, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the Museum of Natural History and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

The event will begin at 3pm on June 6th and end at 3pm on June 7th. Teams of taxonomists will converge at Long Lake Provincial Park (adjacent to Exhibition Park) to identify as many species as possible in five different habitats within the park. Throughout the night, the teams will bring their discoveries to the base camp at Exhibition Park to be identified and catalogued. The goal of the BioBlitz is to survey, as completely as possible, the biodiversity in the park.

The public are invited to attend the festivities on June 7 at 9 a.m. when the event becomes a celebration of environmentally-related activities and will provide a chance for the public to see scientists in action. There will be short presentations, displays, hands-on activities, a Wilderbeats performance, opportunities to meet taxonomists, and other entertainment throughout the day. The closing ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. Admission for this event is free. Don't miss this great opportunity to learn about the enormous biodiversity around us and the people who describe it!

Volunteer opportunities are still available by contacting Suzanne Boudreau at 902.420.5559.
