Halifax - Hands-on science projects are a great way to show students how fun science can be. This is the reason why NS YES! (Nova Scotia Youth Experiences in Science) teamed up with EnCana to create 'Preparing for Science Fairs,' an inspirational DVD for teachers and students about science projects.

Common questions from students are: 'Where do I start?' 'How do I come up with an idea?' and 'How do I conduct an experiment?' - these questions and more are answered in this fun DVD that takes a look inside the Canada Wide Science Fair through the eyes of students. Hosted by two award winning Nova Scotians from the 2007 Canada Wide Science Fair, Sheralynne Deveaux and Darren Rhodenhizer, the video features interviews with youth across Canada who give tips on how to:
- Come up with a great project idea
- Conduct preliminary research
- Conduct the experiment/study/innovation
- Create an eye-catching display board
- Make an award-winning presentation
'Preparing for Science Fairs' takes the viewer through the steps in preparing a project for competition, and includes a simulation of the development of a science project. Using a computer you can access a range of bonus support material including useful websites, documents, and suggestions. Also included are presentations on the three types of projects: experiments, studies, and innovations, with examples of student projects.

'We hope that teachers will find this useful for all students doing science projects, whether or not they compete in a Regional Science Fair,' says Cliff Coveyduc, program director of NS YES! Produced by Prisma Productions, copies of the DVD's may be made for students to take home, and extra copies are available on request. We would be pleased to send a copy to each science teacher at your school while supplies last.

'Preparing for Science Fairs' has been distributed to all Junior and Senior High Schools in Nova Scotia. Order your own free copy while supplies last! Email coveydcs@gov.ns.ca and indicate your request for the Preparing for Science Fairs DVD and include your:

About NS YES!
Nova Scotia is experiencing a critical shortage of people with science and technology backgrounds as the population ages. Science enrollment in high schools is declining, and meanwhile more and more Nova Scotians are relocating to Western Canada to find employment, leaving Nova Scotia's economic future hanging in the balance. At NS YES! (Nova Scotia Youth Experiences in Science), the provincial organization for science fairs, we believe that Nova Scotia's young people have the talent to meet this need, and to ensure a prosperous economic future for our province.

Each year, NS YES! Hosts the Team Nova Scotia Showcase, where regional science fair winners from across the province come to Halifax to showcase their talent to the media and the public before heading off to the national science fair. It is a fun weekend full of activities, and a great reward for all their hard work.

Since our founding in 2000, we have successfully increased participation in science fairs across the province. We offer on-line learning resources for students at www.sciencefairinfo.ns.ca and offer support and learning materials for teachers.

We feel it is important to Nova Scotia's economic future for youth to understand that they can be their own boss, so last year we facilitated the development of Taking Science to Market (with valuable partners CEED, CBDC, and ACOA), a workshop focusing on science and entrepreneurship. The workshop shows students how to generate, protect, and market their scientific and technological ideas.

Our most recent accomplishment is the Science Olympics!

This fall we partnered with Conserve Nova Scotia and the Department of Education to offer the first annual Science Olympics for grade 4 and 5 students across Nova Scotia. Students competed to complete a range of fun science activities at this impressively carbon-neutral event!

It's our mission to inspire young Nova Scotians to experience science in their lives, and to celebrate their discoveries. Inspire, Discover, Celebrate!
