Nova Scotia is sending its largest-ever delegation to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Truro this May.

'We are proud to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding students. They are all examples of how hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm for learning can be rewarding', said Cliff Coveyduc, program director of NS YES, the provincial umbrella organization for science fairs. 'We wish these young ambassadors the best of luck as they represent Nova Scotia at this national event'.

The Team Nova Scotia Showcase brings together all students headed to the national science fair for an open house event. The students will participate in a variety of educational, social and cultural activities geared to build team spirit and give them exposure to the scientific community.

The Team Nova Scotia Showcase is made possible by the generous support of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS), Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Halifax (CMOS), Dalhousie University Faculty of Science, EnCana Corporation, Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Nova Scotia Association of Science Teachers (AST), Nova Scotia Community College, Nova Scotia Department of Education, Nova Scotia Office of Economic Development, Nova Scotia Power, and Resource Recovery Fund Board.

The event is presented by NS YES and is hosted by Saint Mary's University Faculty of Science.

This years Showcase Events include:

Kartbahn Indoor Racing, a Tour of The Atlantic Genome Centre (TAGC) Lab, a Tour of the SMU Lab and Burke-Gaffney Astronomical Observatory, a CEED Entrepreneurship Presentation and much more....

Dr. Gordon Osinski of the Canadian Space Agencies' Space Science Department will be our Keynote Speaker this year on May 4th at the Team Nova Scotia Showcase.

Gordon 'Oz' Osinski is currently an NSERC Visiting Fellow at the Canadian Space Agency in Montreal. He was born and raised in the United Kingdom and graduated from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, with a B.Sc. Honours degree in geology in 1999. Less than a month after completing his final exams, Oz came to Canada to enroll as a Ph.D. student in the Geology Department at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Fredericton, as part of Dr. John Spray's research group. His Ph.D. focused on the geology of the Haughton impact structure and surrounding terrains on Devon Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The Arctic is now in his veins and he has just returned from his eighth consecutive field season in the high Arctic. He has also been a member of two expeditions to Antarctica as part of the Antarctic Search for Meteorites. Oz graduated from UNB in May 2004 and was recently awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal for Academic Excellence in Graduate Studies. His work has resulted in the publication of more than twenty papers in international journals, and some innovative findings.

After moving to the University of Arizona for a brief post-doctoral fellowship, Oz was hired by the Canadian Space Agency. One of his main duties there is to promote Earth-based analogue sites for Mars (e.g., very cold, dry, remote locations). Under the theme of 'Exploring other worlds begins with exploring our own', a multi-disciplinary approach will be taken to use Moon/Mars analogue sites in Arctic Canada to further our scientific knowledge of both the Earth and Mars, develop specific technologies, and understand how to explore in a safe manner on other planets.
