Nova Scotia's up-and-coming scientists came away with three gold, eight silver, eight bronze medals and six honourable mentions from the National Science Fair in Peterborough this May. Nova Scotia students joined 450 of their peers from across the county for the nine-day competition.

Astronomy Nova Scotia will be giving out a $200 prize for the best astronomy project in honour of the International Year of Astronomy at the 2009 Team Nova Scotia Showcase, April 30 to May 2 at Saint Mary's University in Halifax (see attached poster).

Open to all students from elementary to high school, the Star Trail Contest was designed to promote astronomy while developing an interest in space sciences. The contest includes artistic and research essay categories with various prizes!

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, stimulating worldwide interest not only in astronomy, but in science in general, with a particular slant towards young people.

Halifax, NS - Two young Nova Scotia scientists were honored for their invention at last week's Discovery Awards gala in Halifax. The 'Alter-Leg' is an alternative to crutches that promotes the healing of a broken leg, allowing the patient to return to a normal lifestyle more quickly than with a cast and crutches.

Nova Scotia's budding scientists came away with two gold, five silver and nine bronze medals from the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Medals, awards and scholarships were handed out on May 16 in Ottawa. Forty Nova Scotia students joined about 450 of their peers from across the county for the nine-day competition.

This first annual BioBlitz of Nova Scotia will be an opportunity to watch taxonomists - scientists who identify and often name plants, animals and fungi - at work. A BioBlitz is a taxonomic survey to identify as many different groups of organisms as possible in a 24-hour period. This BioBlitz will be held at Exhibition Park and will be led by Saint Mary's University in partnership with the Ecology Action Centre, the Discovery Centre, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the Museum of Natural History and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

The second annual Science Olympics for Grade 4 and 5 classes will take place during National Science and Technology week in October. Over 100 students came out to participate last year for this carbon-neutral event at Saint Mary's University.

The 2007 Team Nova Scotia Showcase will take place on May 3, 4, 5 at Saint Mary's University.
Each spring, students representing the province at the national science fair make their way to Halifax to display their award-winning projects to the public.
In 2007, 38 students will display their innovations, experiments and studies on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 during the Team Nova Scotia Showcase. The event will be hosted in the McNally Theatre Auditorium at Saint Mary's University.

What It Is: Many great scientists were also artists. It is important to be able to document your discoveries as a scientist. Without accessible photography or other documentation techniques that exist today, a scientist had to be able to draw or paint their specimens and experiments.
The Art of Science Competition is a chance for you to spread your artistic wings and fly into the scientific world (and draw a picture). We want to see drawings, paintings, photographs, digital renderings, macaroni art (pictures of your macaroni art) or whatever your medium of choice happens to be - document your favourite scientific experience.

Students from all over the tri-counties gathered at NSCC Burridge Campus on Thursday, March 22, to showcase their scientific prowess at the 5th Annual Tri-County Regional Science Fair. With such project names as 'Bionic Ear', 'The Solar Powered Oven', and 'How to Cover up a Murder', there was no shortness of intrigue among the judges, event organizers, members of the public, and fellow students.

Science Is My Business

'Science Is My Business' is an initiative designed to make the connection between science and everyday life at work. Science in the workplace is not limited to working in a university lab or space exploration with NASA. Science is in our pharmacies, our factories, our parks, and our concert halls. Science is all around us.
In coming weeks we hope to include 'Science Is My Business' interviews here and on the Sciencefairinfo.ns.ca Blog.
